Beginner Questions
What is Web Hosting?
Web Hosting is a service to store and display your web pages on the internet.
When you build a website, you need to place it somewhere so it can not only be stored, but connected to the internet for others to see. Web Hosts provide servers, which combine the necessary hardware and software to display your web pages to visitors.
How Do I Publish a Website?
Web sites are "published" (ie made available on the internet) by uploading files from your PC to the web hosting server.
Most people use HTML authoring software such as Microsoft FrontPage or Macromedia Dreamweaver to design their web pages on their personal computers. More advanced (or old school) designers still work with raw HTML code using text editor such as NotePad. Once the web design process is complete, the pages are uploaded (published) to the web server to be made visible to the internet.
How Do I Upload Files?
Mostl web authoring software enables you to publish your pages by using FTP (file transfer protocol), Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia Dreamweaver use a proprietary publishing mechanism. You can also use FTP Programs such as WS FTP upload your files.
At 5gigs.com, all accounts have cPanel which allows users to upload web pages and files using cPanels File Manager utility.
How Often Can I Update My Site?
You can update your site as often as you wish. In fact, having fresh web content will give your visitors a reason to keep coming back.

Yes, this service is Free to our users, even though it costs us alot of money to operate.
How Can it Be Free?
We rely on sponsors to pay for some of the costs of this business. Our sponsors may display advertisement on users pages. This is a win-win situation for everyone. Our users get free web hosting and we get additional revenue to operate the business and improve services.
Can I Opt Out of Having The Advertising Displayed on My Pages
Yes, in the near future you can opt out for 2.7 cents per day ($10 per year). It currently costs us about $15 per year to host each active account, so even at this price we are losing a little money, but we think this is fair at this time.
We will provide opt-out information on the 5gigs Forums when this feature is implemented.
